Sub Clover

These are self-regenerating annual clovers which bury their seed and with their “hard seed” content, means regeneration is assured. Sub clovers are the basis of mixed pastures in Victoria and regenerate very well from year to year. Main growth period is in autumn to spring. Best to be sown early autumn before the soil temperature gets too cold. There are some exciting new varieties that have come onto the market recently and they offer huge advantages over traditional varieties like Trikkala. The general rule is the yellow seeded (YS) subs have better tolerance to heavy soils and waterlogging compared to the black seeded (BS) subs which prefer more free draining soils. Generally the earlier maturing that the sub clover is, the lower amount of rainfall required. Sub clovers should not be cut for hay in its first year allowing for seed set and regeneration the following year.
